Lucas Valley and the Nicasio loop

The classic West Marin morning. Lucas Valley gets the attention, but the loop beyond it — Nicasio, the Petaluma road, Chileno Valley — is where most of the distance and most of the quiet is.

Why this drive

Four connected roads through dairy country with almost nothing on them early in the day. None of them is especially technical; the appeal is stringing them together and the scenery in between. Watch for cattle, farm traffic and blind crests.

Good places to stop

Make it a loop

From Petaluma take Highway 101 south, or repeat the loop in the opposite direction — the roads read differently the other way round.

Weekends & road conditions

Police sometimes patrol Highway 9 and Skyline, including weekends. Local riders have reported enforcement on both roads. Follow posted limits throughout the drive.

Expect other drivers, motorcycles and cyclists around these popular roads and junctions. Before heading out, check Caltrans QuickMap for state-highway conditions and San Mateo County road closures for local roads.
