Skaggs Springs Road: Lake Sonoma to the coast

A long way from anywhere, which is the point. Skaggs Springs runs from the Lake Sonoma dam west over the ridges to the sea, and for most of that distance there is nothing beside the road but hillside.

  1. Skaggs Springs Road west
  2. Highway 1
Start
Lake Sonoma, north of Healdsburg
Finish
Stewarts Point on Highway 1
Return
Optional loop below

Why this drive

Length is what sets this one apart. Most good roads here are measured in single-digit miles; this is thirty-five of them in one go, at 630 degrees of turning per mile. Fuel up before you start — there is nothing on the road itself, and phone signal comes and goes.

The route

  1. West from Lake Sonoma

Pick up Skaggs Springs Road at the Lake Sonoma dam and head west. The first miles run above the reservoir arms before the road turns inland and climbs.

  2. Highway 1 at Stewarts Point

The road ends on the coast highway. Turn north or south along the ocean, or turn around and drive it back the other way — it reads differently in each direction.

Good places to stop

Make it a loop

Either drive Skaggs Springs back east, or make a longer loop: north on Highway 1 to Gualala, inland toward Cloverdale, and south again through the Alexander Valley.

Weekends & road conditions

Police sometimes patrol Highway 9 and Skyline, including weekends. Local riders have reported enforcement on both roads. Follow posted limits throughout the drive.

Expect other drivers, motorcycles and cyclists around these popular roads and junctions. Before heading out, check Caltrans QuickMap for state-highway conditions and San Mateo County road closures for local roads.
