Planning the drive
Over Saratoga Gap, Highway 9 changes from the front-side climb into a much longer drive through the redwoods. The mapped back side continues through Boulder Creek and the San Lorenzo Valley toward Santa Cruz. Choose it for a forest drive with towns along the way, rather than treating the whole road as one uninterrupted mountain section.
At the ridge, Skyline and the Saratoga front side provide two different ways to continue. Farther down, Highway 236 is a separate Big Basin detour and Bear Creek is another mountain connection near Boulder Creek.
